PADANG - Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer officially launched a campaign to promote quakeproof building methods here on Tuesday.

"The use of quake-proof building methods is important to reduce casualties in earthquakes," said the ambassador at the campaign's launching in Padang's Cultural Park.

Farmer also emphasized the importance of always choosing building materials of good quality and safety-oriented  construction methods.

"Quake-proof construction may cost more, but it is a long term investment in human's life," he said.

The Tuesday campaign is a pilot project funded by the Australia-Indonesia Facility for Disaster Reduction after West Sumatra was hit by a 7.9 earthquake last September 30, 2009, which had caused 1,195 casualties.

The quake-proof building methods promotion campaign was a followup of a bilateral agreement signed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at an APEC meeting in Peru in  2008.

During the 2008 APEC meeting, both leaders agreed to develop Indonesia's capacity to mitigate and handle post-disaster problems.
